Probablyithasmorethanfivesenses,sothatitshabitscouldnotbepredictedfromanyexistinganalogy. Itmust,Lakethought,havebeenacreatureofkeensensitivenessanddelicatelydifferentiatedfunctionsinitsprimalworld-muchliketheantsandbeesoftoday. Itreproducedlikethevegetablecrytogams,especiallythePteridophyta,havingsporecasesatthetipsofthewingsandevidentlydevelopingfromathallusorprothallus.
Buttogiveitanameatthisstagewasmerefolly. Itlookedlikearadiate,butwasclearlysomethingmore. Itwaspartlyvegetable,buthadthree-fourthsoftheessentialsofanimalstructure. Thatitwasmarineinorigin,itssymmetricalcontourandcertainotherattributesclearlyindicated;yetonecouldnotbeexactastothelimitofitslateradaptations. Thewings,afterall,heldapersistentsuggestionoftheaerial.
