ThispersonageprefiguredandrepresentedinhisaspectthewholedismalseverityofthePuritaniccodeoflaw,whichitwashisbusinesstoadministerinitsfinalandclosestapplicationtotheoffender.Stretchingforththeofficialstaffinhislefthand,helaidhisrightupontheshoulderofayoungwoman,whomhethusdrewforward,until,onthethresholdoftheprison-door,sherepelledhim,byanactionmarkedwithnaturaldignityandforceofcharacter,andsteppedintotheopenairasifbyherownfreewill.Sheboreinherarmsachild,ababyofsomethreemonthsold,whowinkedandturnedasideitslittlefacefromthetoovividlightofday;becauseitsexistence,heretofore,hadbroughtitacquaintanceonlywiththegreytwilightofadungeon,orotherdarksomeapartmentoftheprison.
