Thelatterwasbyfarthemostshowyandgallantfigure,sofarasapparelwent,anywheretobeseenamongthemultitude.Heworeaprofusionofribbonsonhisgarment,andgoldlaceonhishat,whichwasalsoencircledbyagoldchain,andsurmountedwithafeather.Therewasaswordathissideandasword-cutonhisforehead,which,bythearrangementofhishair,heseemedanxiousrathertodisplaythanhide.Alandsmancouldhardlyhavewornthisgarbandshownthisface,andwornandshownthembothwithsuchagalliardair,withoutundergoingsternquestionbeforeamagistrate,andprobablyincurringafineorimprisonment,orperhapsanexhibitioninthestocks.Asregardedtheshipmaster,however,allwaslookeduponaspertainingtothecharacter,astoafishhisglisteningscales.
