Infactitwasratherdifficultforhertokeepinherplacewhileshemadeherspeech:thetwoQueenspushedherso,oneoneachside,thattheynearlyliftedherupintotheair:‘Irisetoreturnthanks—’Alicebegan:andshereallydidriseasshespoke,severalinches;butshegotholdoftheedgeofthetable,andmanagedtopullherselfdownagain.
‘Takecareofyourself!’screamedtheWhiteQueen,seizingAlice’shairwithbothherhands.‘Something’sgoingtohappen!’
Andthen(asAliceafterwardsdescribedit)allsortsofthinghappenedinamoment.Thecandlesallgrewuptotheceiling,lookingsomethinglikeabedofrusheswithfireworksatthetop.Astothebottles,theyeachtookapairofplates,whichtheyhastilyfittedonaswings,andso,withforksforlegs,wentflutteringaboutinalldirections:‘andverylikebirdstheylook,’Alicethoughttoherself,aswellasshecouldinthedreadfulconfusionthatwasbeginning.
Atthismomentsheheardahoarselaughatherside,andturnedtoseewhatwasthematterwiththeWhiteQueen;but,insteadoftheQueen,therewasthelegofmuttonsittinginthechair.‘HereIam!’criedavoicefromthesouptureen,andAliceturnedagain,justintimetoseetheQueen’sbroadgood-naturedfacegrinningatherforamomentovertheedgeofthetureen,beforeshedisappearedintothesoup.
