           Thisdreadwasnotexactlyadreadofphysicalevil—andyetIshouldbeatalosshowotherwisetodefineit. Iamalmostashamedtoown—yes,eveninthisfelon’scell,Iamalmostashamedtoown —thattheterrorandhorrorwithwhichtheanimalinspiredme,hadbeenheightenedbyoneofthemerestchimaerasitwouldbepossibletoconceive. Mywifehadcalledmyattention,morethanonce,tothecharacterofthemarkofwhitehair, ofwhichIhavespoken,andwhichconstitutedthesolevisibledifferencebetweenthestrangebeastandtheoneIhaddestroyed.
