Wewentdownthelane,bythebodyofthemaninblack,soddennowfromtheovernighthail,andbrokeintothewoodsatthefootofthehill. Wepushedthroughthesetowardstherailwaywithoutmeetingasoul. Thewoodsacrossthelinewerebutthescarredandblackenedruinsofwoods;forthemostpartthetreeshadfallen,butacertainproportionstillstood,dismalgreystems,withdarkbrownfoliageinsteadofgreen.
Onoursidethefirehaddonenomorethanscorchthenearertrees;ithadfailedtosecureitsfooting. InoneplacethewoodmenhadbeenatworkonSaturday; trees,felledandfreshlytrimmed,layinaclearing,withheapsofsawdustbythesawing-machineanditsengine. Hardbywasatemporaryhut,deserted. Therewasnotabreathofwindthismorning,andeverythingwasstrangelystill. Eventhebirdswerehushed,andaswehurriedalongIandtheartillerymantalkedinwhispersandlookednowandagainoverourshoulders.
