Theysawtheflashesandthemenfallingandaninvisiblehand,asitwere,litthebushesasithurriedtowardsthemthroughthetwilight. Then,withawhistlingnotethatroseabovethedroningofthepit,thebeamswungcloseovertheirheads, lightingthetopsofthebeechtreesthatlinetheroad, andsplittingthebricks,smashingthewindows,firingthewindowframes,andbringingdownincrumblingruinaportionofthegableofthehousenearestthecorner.
Inthesuddenthud,hiss,andglareoftheignitingtrees,thepanic-strickencrowdseemstohaveswayedhesitatinglyforsomemoments. Sparksandburningtwigsbegantofallintotheroad,andsingleleaveslikepuffsofflame. Hatsanddressescaughtfire. Thencameacryingfromthecommon. Therewereshrieksandshouts,andsuddenlyamountedpolicemancamegallopingthroughtheconfusionwithhishandsclaspedoverhishead,screaming.
‘They’recoming!’awomanshrieked,andincontinentlyeveryonewasturningandpushingatthosebehind,inordertocleartheirwaytoWokingagain. Theymusthaveboltedasblindlyasaflockofsheep. Wheretheroadgrowsnarrowandblackbetweenthehighbanksthecrowdjammed,andadesperatestruggleoccurred. Allthatcrowddidnotescape; threepersonsatleast,twowomenandalittleboy,werecrushedandtrampledthere,andlefttodieamidtheterrorandthedarkness.
