Theyjustusedtoskedaddleofftowork—I’veseenhundredsof’em,bitofbreakfastinhand,runningwildandshiningtocatchtheirlittleseason-tickettrain,forfearthey’dgetdismissediftheydidn’t; workingatbusinessestheywereafraidtotakethetroubletounderstand; skedaddlingbackforfeartheywouldn’tbeintimefordinner; keepingindoorsafterdinnerforfearofthebackstreets,andsleepingwiththewivestheymarried,notbecausetheywantedthem,butbecausetheyhadabitofmoneythatwouldmakeforsafetyintheironelittlemiserableskedaddlethroughtheworld.
