TheBlackSmokedriftedslowlyriverwardallthroughMondaymorning,creepingnearerandnearertous,drivingatlastalongtheroadwayoutsidethehousethathidus.
AMartiancameacrossthefieldsaboutmidday,layingthestuffwithajetofsuperheatedsteamthathissedagainstthewalls,smashedallthewindowsittouched,andscaldedthecurate’shandashefledoutofthefrontroom. Whenatlastwecreptacrossthesoddenroomsandlookedoutagain,thecountrynorthwardwasasthoughablacksnowstormhadpassedoverit. Lookingtowardstheriver,wewereastonishedtoseeanunaccountablerednessminglingwiththeblackofthescorchedmeadows.
Foratimewedidnotseehowthischangeaffectedourposition,savethatwewererelievedofourfearoftheBlackSmoke. ButlaterIperceivedthatwewerenolongerhemmedin,thatnowwemightgetaway. SosoonasIrealisedthatthewayofescapewasopen,mydreamofactionreturned. Butthecuratewaslethargic,unreasonable.

InSunbury,andatintervalsalongtheroad,weredeadbodieslyingincontortedattitudes,horsesaswellasmen,overturnedcartsandluggage,allcoveredthicklywithblackdust.
