           Fromfarshorescamethosewhite-sailedargosiesofold;fromfarEasternshoreswherewarmsunsshineandsweetodorslingeraboutstrangegardensandgaytemples. Theoldcaptainsoftheseacameoftentomygrandfatherandtoldhimofthesethingswhichinturnhetoldtomyfather,andmyfathertoldtomeinthelongautumneveningswhenthewindhowledeerilyfromtheEast. AndIhavereadmoreofthesethings,andofmanythingsbesides,inthebooksmengavemewhenIwasyoungandfilledwithwonder. 

           Butmorewonderfulthantheloreofoldmenandtheloreofbooksisthesecretloreofocean. Blue,green,gray,whiteorblack;smooth,ruffled,ormountainous;thatoceanisnotsilent. AllmydayshaveIwatcheditandlistenedtoit,andIknowitwell. Atfirstittoldtomeonlytheplainlittletalesofcalmbeachesandnearports,butwiththeyearsitgrewmorefriendlyandspokeofotherthings;ofthingsmorestrangeandmoredistantinspaceandtime.
