Againthespectreraisedacry,andshookitschainandwrungitsshadowyhands.

Scroogetrembledmoreandmore.
‘Orwouldyouknow,’pursuedtheGhost,‘theweightandlengthofthestrongcoilyoubearyourself?Itwasfullasheavyandaslongasthis,sevenChristmasEvesago.Youhavelabouredonit,since.Itisaponderouschain!’
Scroogeglancedabouthimonthefloor,intheexpectationoffindinghimselfsurroundedbysomefiftyorsixtyfathomsofironcable:buthecouldseenothing.
‘Jacob,’hesaid,imploringly.‘OldJacobMarley,tellmemore.Speakcomforttome,Jacob!’
