           ‘InlifeIwasyourpartner,JacobMarley.

           ‘Canyoucanyousitdown?’askedScrooge,lookingdoubtfullyathim.

           ‘Ican.

           ‘Doit,then.

           Scroogeaskedthequestion,becausehedidn’tknowwhetheraghostsotransparentmightfindhimselfinaconditiontotakeachair;andfeltthatintheeventofitsbeingimpossible,itmightinvolvethenecessityofanembarrassingexplanation.Buttheghostsatdownontheoppositesideofthefireplace,asifhewerequiteusedtoit.

           Scroogewasnotmuchinthehabitofcrackingjokes,nordidhefeel,inhisheart,byanymeanswaggishthen.
