Everyafternoon,whenschoolwasover,thechildrencameandplayedwiththeGiant.ButthelittleboywhomtheGiantlovedwasneverseenagain.TheGiantwasverykindtoallthechildren,yethelongedforhisfirstlittlefriend,andoftenspokeofhim."HowIwouldliketoseehim!"heusedtosay.
Yearswentover,andtheGiantgrewveryoldandfeeble.Hecouldnotplayaboutanymore,sohesatinahugearmchair,andwatchedthechildrenattheirgames,andadmiredhisgarden."Ihavemanybeautifulflowers,"hesaid;"butthechildrenarethemostbeautifulflowersofall."
Onewintermorninghelookedoutofhiswindowashewasdressing.Hedidnothatethewinternow,forheknewthatitwasmerelytheSpringasleep,andthattheflowerswereresting.
Suddenlyherubbedhiseyesinwonderandlookedandlooked.Itcertainlywasamarvelloussight.Inthefarthestcornerofthegardenwasatreequitecoveredwithlovelywhiteblossoms.Itsbrancheswereallgolden,andsilverfruithungdownfromthem,andunderneathitstoodthelittleboyhehadloved
