           Whyisheweeping?"askedalittleGreenLizard,asheranpasthimwithhistailintheair.

           "Why,indeed?"saidaButterfly,whowasflutteringaboutafterasunbeam.

           "Why,indeed?"whisperedaDaisytohisneighbour,inasoft,lowvoice.

           "Heisweepingforaredrose,"saidtheNightingale.

           "Foraredrose?"theycried;"howveryridiculous!"andthelittleLizard,whowassomethingofacynic,laughedoutright.

           ButtheNightingaleunderstoodthesecretoftheStudent’ssorrow,andshesatsilentintheoak-tree,andthoughtaboutthemysteryofLove.

           Suddenlyshespreadherbrownwingsforflight,andsoaredintotheair.Shepassedthroughthegrovelikeashadow,andlikeashadowshesailedacrossthegarden.

           Inthecentreofthegrass-plotwasstandingabeautifulRose-tree,andwhenshesawitsheflewovertoit,andlituponaspray.
