           Heputbranandsow-thistleintohisbag, andstretchinghimselfoutatlength,asifhehadbeendead,hewaitedforsomeyoungrabbit,notyetacquaintedwiththedeceitsoftheworld,tocomeandrummagehisbagforwhathehadputintoit. 

           Scarcewashelaindown,buthehadwhathewanted;arashandfoolishyoungrabbitjumpedintohisbag, andMonsieurPuss,immediatelydrawingclosethestrings,tookandkilledhimwithoutpity. Proudofhisprey,hewentwithittothepalace,andaskedtospeakwithhisMajesty.HewasshewedupstairsintotheKing’sapartment,and,makingalowreverence,saidtohim: 

           "Ihavebroughtyou,sir,arabbitofthewarrenwhichmynoblelordtheMarquisofCarabas"(forthatwasthetitlewhichPusswaspleasedtogivehismaster)"hascommandedmetopresenttoyourMajestyfromhim." 

           "Tellthymaster,"saidtheKing,"thatIthankhim,andthathedoesmeagreatdealofpleasure." 

           Anothertimehewentandhidhimselfamongsomestandingcorn,holdingstillhisbagopen; andwhenabraceofpartridgesranintoit,hedrewthestrings,andsocaughtthemboth.HewentandmadeapresentofthesetotheKing,ashehaddonebeforeoftherabbitwhichhetookinthewarren. TheKinginlikemannerreceivedthepartridgeswithgreatpleasure,andorderedhimsomemoneytodrink. 

           TheCatcontinuedfortwoorthreemonths,thustocarryhisMajesty,fromtimetotime,gameofhismaster’staking.
