Nowandagainmencame,strangers,whotalkedexcitedly,wheedlingly,andinallkindsoffashionstothemanintheredsweater. Andatsuchtimesthatmoneypassedbetweenthemthestrangerstookoneormoreofthedogsawaywiththem. Buckwonderedwheretheywent,fortheynevercameback; butthefearofthefuturewasstronguponhim,andhewasgladeachtimewhenhewasnotselected.
Yethistimecame,intheend,intheformofalittleweazenedmanwhospatbrokenEnglishandmanystrangeanduncouthexclamationswhichBuckcouldnotunderstand.

Perraultgrinned. Consideringthatthepriceofdogshadbeenboomedskywardbytheunwonteddemand,itwasnotanunfairsumforsofineananimal. TheCanadianGovernmentwouldbenoloser,norwoulditsdespatchestraveltheslower.
