Thebas-reliefwasaroughrectanglelessthananinchthick andaboutfivebysixinchesinarea;obviouslyofmodernorigin. Itsdesigns,however,werefarfrommoderninatmosphereandsuggestion; foralthoughthevagariesofcubismandfuturismaremanyandwild, theydonotoftenreproducethatcrypticregularity whichlurksinprehistoricwriting. Andwritingofsomekindthebulkofthesedesignsseemedcertainlytobe; thoughmymemory,despitemuchfamiliaritywiththepapersandcollectionsofmyuncle, failedinanywaytoidentifythisparticularspecies, orevenhintatitsremotestaffiliations.
