ThreeoftheEmma’smen,includingCapt.CollinsandFirstMateGreen,werekilled; andtheremainingeightunderSecondMateJohansenproceededtonavigatethecapturedyacht,goingaheadintheiroriginaldirectiontoseeifanyreasonfortheirorderingbackhadexisted. Thenextday,itappears,theyraisedandlandedonasmallisland,althoughnoneisknowntoexistinthatpartoftheocean; andsixofthemensomehowdiedashore,thoughJohansenisqueerlyreticentaboutthispartofhisstory,andspeaksonlyoftheirfallingintoarockchasm. Later,itseems,heandonecompanionboardedtheyachtandtriedtomanageher,butwerebeatenaboutbythestormofApril2nd. Fromthattimetillhisrescueonthe12ththemanrememberslittle,andhedoesnotevenrecallwhenWilliamBriden,hiscompanion,died. Briden’sdeathrevealsnoapparentcause,andwasprobablyduetoexcitementorexposure. CableadvicesfromDunedinreportthattheAlertwaswellknownthereasanislandtrader,andboreanevilreputationalongthewaterfront. Itwasownedbyacuriousgroupofhalf-casteswhosefrequentmeetingsandnighttripstothewoodsattractednolittlecuriosity; andithadsetsailingreathastejustafterthestormandearthtremorsofMarch1st.
