Examinedatheadquartersafteratripofintensestrainandweariness,theprisonersallprovedtobemenofaverylow,mixed-blooded,andmentallyaberranttype. Mostwereseamen,andasprinklingofNegroesandmulattoes,largelyWestIndiansorBravaPortuguesefromtheCapeVerdeIslands,gaveacolouringofvoodooismtotheheterogeneouscult. Butbeforemanyquestionswereasked,itbecamemanifestthatsomethingfardeeperandolderthanNegrofetichismwasinvolved. Degradedandignorantastheywere,thecreaturesheldwithsurprisingconsistencytothecentralideaoftheirloathsomefaith.
Theyworshipped,sotheysaid,theGreatOldOneswholivedagesbeforetherewereanymen,andwhocametotheyoungworldoutofthesky. ThoseOldOnesweregonenow,insidetheearthandunderthesea;buttheirdeadbodieshadtoldtheirsecretsindreamstothefirstmen,whoformedacultwhichhadneverdied. Thiswasthatcult,andtheprisonerssaidithadalwaysexistedandalwayswouldexist,hiddenindistantwastesanddarkplacesallovertheworlduntilthetimewhenthegreatpriestCthulhu,fromhisdarkhouseinthemightycityofR’lyehunderthewaters,shouldriseandbringtheearthagainbeneathhissway.
