           Thoughmystified,Iwasobedient.ThemeansoftransportinElmer’sDalewerelimited.ThelocalgaragehadtwobatteredFordcars,andthereweretwostationflies.Noneofthesehadbeenrequisitionedonthedateinquestion.Questioned,Mrs.HaveringexplainedthatshehadgiventhewomanthemoneyforherfaredowntoDerbyshireandsufficienttohireacarorflytotakeheruptoHunter’sLodge.TherewasusuallyoneoftheFordsatthestationonthechanceofitsbeingrequired.Takingintoconsiderationthefurtherfactthatnobodyatthestationhadnoticedthearrivalofastranger,black-beardedorotherwise,onthefatalevening,everythingseemedtopointtotheconclusionthatthemurdererhadcometothespotinacar,whichhadbeenwaitingnearathandtoaidhisescape,andthatthesamecarhadbroughtthemysterioushousekeepertohernewpost.
