“HewasatEntfieldracesonSaturday,thoughIdaresayscarfpinswashislineofbusiness,ratherthanbetting.Anyway,hehadabadday,andwasdownonhisluck.HewastrampingalongtheroadtoChingside,andsatdowninaditchtorestjustbeforehegotintothevillage.Afewminuteslaterhenoticedamancomingalongtheroadtothevillage,‘dark-complexionedgent,withabigmoustache,oneofthemcitytoffs,’ishisdescriptionoftheman.
