           Herushedlikeamadmanfromtheroom,andIfollowedhimassoonasIhadsufficientlyrecoveredmywits.But,bythetimeIhadreachedthetopofthestairs,hewasoutofsight.

           MaryCavendishwasstandingwherethestaircasebranched,staringdownintothehallinthedirectioninwhichhehaddisappeared.
