Thegentlemenwhorentedtheroomwouldsometimestaketheireveningmealathomeinthelivingroomthatwasusedbyeveryone,andsothedoortothisroomwasoftenkeptclosedintheevening.ButGregorfounditeasytogiveuphavingthedooropen,hehad,afterall,oftenfailedtomakeuseofitwhenitwasopenand,withoutthefamilyhavingnoticedit,laininhisroominitsdarkestcorner.Onetime,though,thecharwomanleftthedoortothelivingroomslightlyopen,anditremainedopenwhenthegentlemenwhorentedtheroomcameinintheeveningandthelightwasputon.Theysatupatthetablewhere,formerly,Gregorhadtakenhismealswithhisfatherandmother,theyunfoldedtheserviettesandpickeduptheirknivesandforks.Gregor’smotherimmediatelyappearedinthedoorwaywithadishofmeatandsoonbehindhercamehissisterwithadishpiledhighwithpotatoes.Thefoodwassteaming,andfilledtheroomwithitssmell.Thegentlemenbentoverthedishessetinfrontofthemasiftheywantedtotestthefoodbeforeeatingit,andthegentlemaninthemiddle,whoseemedtocountasanauthorityfortheothertwo,didindeedcutoffapieceofmeatwhileitwasstillinitsdish,clearlywishingtoestablishwhetheritwassufficientlycookedorwhetheritshouldbesentbacktothekitchen.
