Gregor’ssisterwasexhaustedfromgoingouttowork,andlookingafterGregorasshehaddonebeforewasevenmoreworkforher,butevensohismotheroughtcertainlynottohavetakenherplace.Gregor,ontheotherhand,oughtnottobeneglected.Now,though,thecharwomanwashere.Thiselderlywidow,witharobustbonestructurethatmadeherabletowithstandthehardestofthingsinherlonglife,wasn’treallyrepelledbyGregor.Justbychanceoneday,ratherthananyrealcuriosity,sheopenedthedoortoGregor’sroomandfoundherselffacetofacewithhim.Hewastakentotallybysurprise,no-onewaschasinghimbuthebegantorushtoandfrowhileshejuststoodthereinamazementwithherhandscrossedinfrontofher.Fromthenonsheneverfailedtoopenthedoorslightlyeveryeveningandmorningandlookbrieflyinonhim.
