Gregorevenlearned,listeningtotheeveningconversationaboutwhatpricetheyhadhopedfor,thatseveralitemsofjewellerybelongingtothefamilyhadbeensold,eventhoughbothmotherandsisterhadbeenveryfondofwearingthematfunctionsandcelebrations.Buttheloudestcomplaintwasthatalthoughtheflatwasmuchtoobigfortheirpresentcircumstances,theycouldnotmoveoutofit,therewasnoimaginablewayoftransferringGregortothenewaddress.Hecouldseequitewell,though,thatthereweremorereasonsthanconsiderationforhimthatmadeitdifficultforthemtomove,itwouldhavebeenquiteeasytotransporthiminanysuitablecratewithafewairholesinit;themainthingholdingthefamilybackfromtheirdecisiontomovewasmuchmoretodowiththeirtotaldespair,andthethoughtthattheyhadbeenstruckwithamisfortuneunlikeanythingexperiencedbyanyoneelsetheykneworwererelatedto.Theycarriedoutabsolutelyeverythingthattheworldexpectsfrompoorpeople,Gregor’sfatherbroughtbankemployeestheirbreakfast,hismothersacrificedherselfbywashingclothesforstrangers,hissisterranbackandforthbehindherdeskatthebehestofthecustomers,buttheyjustdidnothavethestrengthtodoanymore.AndtheinjuryinGregor’sbackbegantohurtasmuchaswhenitwasnew.
