Sosherefusedtolethermotherdissuadeher.Gregor’smotheralreadylookeduneasyinhisroom,shesoonstoppedspeakingandhelpedGregor’ssistertogetthechestofdrawersoutwithwhatstrengthshehad.ThechestofdrawerswassomethingthatGregorcoulddowithoutifhehadto,butthewritingdeskhadtostay.Hardlyhadthetwowomenpushedthechestofdrawers,groaning,outoftheroomthanGregorpokedhisheadoutfromunderthecouchtoseewhathecoulddoaboutit.Hemeanttobeascarefulandconsiderateashecould,but,unfortunately,itwashismotherwhocamebackfirstwhileGreteinthenextroomhadherarmsroundthechest,pushingandpullingatitfromsidetosidebyherselfwithout,ofcourse,movingitaninch.HismotherwasnotusedtothesightofGregor,hemighthavemadeherill,soGregorhurriedbackwardstothefarendofthecouch.
