ThiswashowGregorreceivedhisfoodeachdaynow,onceinthemorningwhilehisparentsandthemaidwerestillasleep,andthesecondtimeaftereveryonehadeatentheirmealatmiddayashisparentswouldsleepforalittlewhilethenaswell,andGregor’ssisterwouldsendthemaidawayonsomeerrand.Gregor’sfatherandmothercertainlydidnotwanthimtostarveeither,butperhapsitwouldhavebeenmorethantheycouldstandtohaveanymoreexperienceofhisfeedingthanbeingtoldaboutit,andperhapshissisterwantedtosparethemwhatdistressshecouldastheywereindeedsufferingenough.
ItwasimpossibleforGregortofindoutwhattheyhadtoldthedoctorandthelocksmiththatfirstmorningtogetthemoutoftheflat.Asnobodycouldunderstandhim,nobody,notevenhissister,thoughtthathecouldunderstandthem,sohehadtobecontenttohearhissister’ssighsandappealstothesaintsasshemovedabouthisroom.Itwasonlylater,whenshehadbecomealittlemoreusedtoeverything—therewas,ofcourse,noquestionofhereverbecomingfullyusedtothesituation—thatGregorwouldsometimescatchafriendlycomment,oratleastacommentthatcouldbeconstruedasfriendly.“He’senjoyedhisdinnertoday”,shemightsaywhenhehaddiligentlyclearedawayallthefoodleftforhim,orifheleftmostofit,whichslowlybecamemoreandmorefrequent,shewouldoftensay,sadly,“noweverything’sjustbeenleftthereagain”.
