—Opposedtothispainofextensionandyetcoexistentwithitwehavethepainofintensity.Hellisthecentreofevilsand,asyouknow,thingsaremoreintenseattheircentresthanattheirremotestpoints.Therearenocontrariesoradmixturesofanykindtotemperorsoftenintheleastthepainsofhell.Nay,thingswhicharegoodinthemselvesbecomeevilinhell.Company,elsewhereasourceofcomforttotheafflicted,willbethereacontinualtorment:knowledge,somuchlongedforasthechiefgoodoftheintellect,willtherebehatedworsethanignorance:light,somuchcovetedbyallcreaturesfromthelordofcreationdowntothehumblestplantintheforest,willbeloathedintensely.Inthislifeoursorrowsareeithernotverylongornotverygreatbecausenatureeitherovercomesthembyhabitsorputsanendtothembysinkingundertheirweight.
