Hefoundeditupontherockofages,andendoweditwithHisgrace,withsacramentsandsacrifice,andpromisedthatifmenwouldobeythewordofHischurchtheywouldstillenterintoeternallife;butif,afterallthathadbeendoneforthem,theystillpersistedintheirwickedness,thereremainedforthemaneternityoftorment:hell.
Thepreacher’svoicesank.Hepaused,joinedhispalmsforaninstant,partedthem.Thenheresumed:
—Nowletustryforamomenttorealize,asfaraswecan,thenatureofthatabodeofthedamnedwhichthejusticeofanoffendedGodhascalledintoexistencefortheeternalpunishmentofsinners.Hellisastraitanddarkandfoul-smellingprison,anabodeofdemonsandlostsouls,filledwithfireandsmoke.ThestraitnessofthisprisonhouseisexpresslydesignedbyGodtopunishthosewhorefusedtobeboundbyHislaws.Inearthlyprisonsthepoorcaptivehasatleastsomelibertyofmovement,wereitonlywithinthefourwallsofhiscellorinthegloomyyardofhisprison.Notsoinhell.There,byreasonofthegreatnumberofthedamned,theprisonersareheapedtogetherintheirawfulprison,thewallsofwhicharesaidtobefourthousandmilesthick:andthedamnedaresoutterlyboundandhelplessthat,asablessedsaint,saintAnselm,writesinhisbookonsimilitudes,theyarenotevenabletoremovefromtheeyeawormthatgnawsit.
