           Perhapsthechildrenwouldhavelovedthecanalasmuchastherailway,butfortwothings.OnewasthattheyhadfoundtherailwayFIRST—onthatfirst,wonderfulmorningwhenthehouseandthecountryandthemoorsandrocksandgreathillswereallnewtothem.Theyhadnotfoundthecanaltillsomedayslater.TheotherreasonwasthateveryoneontherailwayhadbeenkindtothemtheStationMaster,thePorter,andtheoldgentlemanwhowaved.Andthepeopleonthecanalwereanythingbutkind.

           Thepeopleonthecanalwere,ofcourse,thebargees,whosteeredtheslowbargesupanddown,orwalkedbesidetheoldhorsesthattrampledupthemudofthetowing-path,andstrainedatthelongtow-ropes.
