TheyfoundthemselvesstandingontheveryedgeoftheWildWood.Rocksandbramblesandtree-rootsbehindthem,confusedlyheapedandtangled;infront,agreatspaceofquietfields,hemmedbylinesofhedgesblackonthesnow,and,farahead,aglintofthefamiliaroldriver,whilethewintrysunhungredandlowonthehorizon.TheOtter,asknowingallthepaths,tookchargeoftheparty,andtheytrailedoutonabee-lineforadistantstile.Pausingthereamomentandlookingback,theysawthewholemassoftheWildWood,dense,menacing,compact,grimlysetinvastwhitesurroundings;simultaneouslytheyturnedandmadeswiftlyforhome,forfirelightandthefamiliarthingsitplayedon,forthevoice,soundingcheerilyoutsidetheirwindow,oftheriverthattheyknewandtrustedinallitsmoods,thatnevermadethemafraidwithanyamazement
