Aftersomemilesofcountrylaneshereachedthehighroad,andasheturnedintoitandglancedalongitswhitelength,hesawapproachinghimaspeckthatturnedintoadotandthenintoablob,andthenintosomethingveryfamiliar;andadoublenoteofwarning,onlytoowellknown,fellonhisdelightedear.
"Thisissomethinglike!"saidtheexcitedToad."Thisisreallifeagain,thisisoncemorethegreatworldfromwhichIhavebeenmissedsolong!Iwillhailthem,mybrothersofthewheel,andpitchthemayarn,ofthesortthathasbeensosuccessfulhitherto;andtheywillgivemealift,ofcourse,andthenIwilltalktothemsomemore;and,perhaps,withluck,itmayevenendinmydrivinguptoToadHallinamotor-car!ThatwillbeoneintheeyeforBadger!"
Hesteppedconfidentlyoutintotheroadtohailthemotor-car,whichcamealongataneasypace,slowingdownasitnearedthelane;whensuddenlyhebecameverypale,hisheartturnedtowater,hiskneesshookandyieldedunderhim,andhedoubledupandcollapsedwithasickeningpaininhisinterior.
