           Therewasnousetryingtoevadeit,foranyalternativecoursewouldinvolvedetoursofpossiblydisastrousvisibilityanddelayingeffect.Theonlythingtodowastocrossitboldlyandopenly;imitatingthetypicalshambleoftheInnsmouthfolkasbestIcould,andtrustingthatnooneoratleastnopursuerofminewouldbethere.

           Justhowfullythepursuitwasorganisedandindeed,justwhatitspurposemightbeIcouldformnoidea.Thereseemedtobeunusualactivityinthetown,butIjudgedthatthenewsofmyescapefromtheGilmanhadnotyetspread.Iwould,ofcourse,soonhavetoshiftfromWashingtontosomeothersouthwardstreet;forthatpartyfromthehotelwoulddoubtlessbeafterme.Imusthaveleftdustprintsinthatlastoldbuilding,revealinghowIhadgainedthestreet.

           Theopenspacewas,asIhadexpected,stronglymoonlit;andIsawtheremainsofaparklike,iron-railedgreeninitscenter.FortunatelynoonewasaboutthoughacurioussortofbuzzorroarseemedtobeincreasinginthedirectionofTownSquare.SouthStreetwasverywide,leadingdirectlydownaslightdeclivitytothewaterfrontandcommandingalongviewouttosea;andIhopedthatnoonewouldbeglancingupitfromafarasIcrossedinthebrightmoonlight.

           Myprogresswasunimpeded,andnofreshsoundarosetohintthatIhadbeenspied.Glancingaboutme,Iinvoluntarilyletmypaceslackenforasecondtotakeinthesightofthesea,gorgeousintheburningmoonlightatthestreet’send.
