           Therewasonlyonedangerthatmyjointswouldrust; butIkeptanoil-caninmycottageandtookcaretooilmyselfwheneverIneededit. However,therecameadaywhenIforgottodothis,and,beingcaughtinarainstorm, beforeIthoughtofthedangermyjointshadrusted,andIwaslefttostandinthewoodsuntilyoucametohelpme. Itwasaterriblethingtoundergo,butduringtheyearIstoodthereIhadtimetothinkthatthegreatestlossIhadknownwasthelossofmyheart. WhileIwasinloveIwasthehappiestmanonearth; butnoonecanlovewhohasnotaheart,andsoIamresolvedtoaskOztogivemeone. Ifhedoes,IwillgobacktotheMunchkinmaidenandmarryher." 

           BothDorothyandtheScarecrowhadbeengreatlyinterestedinthestoryoftheTinWoodman,andnowtheyknewwhyhewassoanxioustogetanewheart. 

           "Allthesame,"saidtheScarecrow,"Ishallaskforbrainsinsteadofaheart; forafoolwouldnotknowwhattodowithaheartifhehadone." 

           "Ishalltaketheheart,"returnedtheTinWoodman; "forbrainsdonotmakeonehappy,andhappinessisthebestthingintheworld." 

           Dorothydidnotsayanything,forshewaspuzzledtoknowwhichofhertwofriendswasright, andshedecidedifshecouldonlygetbacktoKansasandAuntEm,itdidnotmattersomuchwhethertheWoodmanhadnobrainsandtheScarecrownoheart,oreachgotwhathewanted. 

           Whatworriedhermostwasthatthebreadwasnearlygone,andanothermealforherselfandTotowouldemptythebasket.
