           "Haveyouany?"inquiredtheScarecrow. 

           "No,myheadisquiteempty,"answeredtheWoodman. "ButonceIhadbrains,andaheartalso;so,havingtriedthemboth,Ishouldmuchratherhaveaheart." 

           "Andwhyisthat?"askedtheScarecrow. 

           "Iwilltellyoumystory,andthenyouwillknow." 

           So,whiletheywerewalkingthroughtheforest,theTinWoodmantoldthefollowingstory: 

           "Iwasbornthesonofawoodmanwhochoppeddowntreesintheforestandsoldthewoodforaliving. WhenIgrewup,Itoobecameawoodchopper,andaftermyfatherdiedItookcareofmyoldmotheraslongasshelived. ThenImadeupmymindthatinsteadoflivingaloneIwouldmarry,sothatImightnotbecomelonely. 

           "TherewasoneoftheMunchkingirlswhowassobeautifulthatIsoongrewtoloveherwithallmyheart. She,onherpart,promisedtomarrymeassoonasIcouldearnenoughmoneytobuildabetterhouseforher;soIsettoworkharderthanever. Butthegirllivedwithanoldwomanwhodidnotwanthertomarryanyone,forshewassolazyshewishedthegirltoremainwithheranddothecookingandthehousework. SotheoldwomanwenttotheWickedWitchoftheEast,andpromisedhertwosheepandacowifshewouldpreventthemarriage.
