           Therewasnoboatoffthepoint,noranyboatdrawnupanywherenearit,norwerethereanysignsofthemenhavingembarkedthere.But,tobesure,thetidewashigh,andtheremighthavebeensomefootpintsunderwater.

           Whenhelookedoutfromhisshelterinthedistance,andsawthatIwavedmyhattohimtocomeup,herejoinedme,andtherewewaited;sometimeslyingonthebank,wrappedinourcoats,andsometimesmovingabouttowarmourselves,untilwesawourboatcominground.Wegotaboardeasily,androwedoutintothetrackofthesteamer.Bythattimeitwantedbuttenminutesofoneo’clock,andwebegantolookoutforhersmoke.

           But,itwashalf-pastonebeforewesawhersmoke,andsoonafterwardswesawbehinditthesmokeofanothersteamer.Astheywerecomingonatfullspeed,wegotthetwobagsready,andtookthatopportunityofsayinggoodbytoHerbertandStartop.Wehadallshakenhandscordially,andneitherHerbert’seyesnorminewerequitedry,whenIsawafour-oaredgalleyshootoutfromunderthebankbutalittlewayaheadofus,androwoutintothesametrack.
