           IsatdownintheclientalchairplacedoveragainstMr.Jaggers’schair,andbecamefascinatedbythedismalatmosphereoftheplace.Icalledtomindthattheclerkhadthesameairofknowingsomethingtoeverybodyelse’sdisadvantage,ashismasterhad.Iwonderedhowmanyotherclerkstherewereup-stairs,andwhethertheyallclaimedtohavethesamedetrimentalmasteryoftheirfellow-creatures.Iwonderedwhatwasthehistoryofalltheoddlitterabouttheroom,andhowitcamethere.IwonderedwhetherthetwoswollenfaceswereofMr.Jaggers’sfamily,and,ifheweresounfortunateastohavehadapairofsuchill-lookingrelations,whyhestuckthemonthatdustyperchfortheblacksandfliestosettleon,insteadofgivingthemaplaceathome.OfcourseIhadnoexperienceofaLondonsummerday,andmyspiritsmayhavebeenoppressedbythehotexhaustedair,andbythedustandgritthatlaythickoneverything.ButIsatwonderingandwaitinginMr.Jaggers’scloseroom,untilIreallycouldnotbearthetwocastsontheshelfaboveMr.Jaggers’schair,andgotupandwentout.
