           ItwasChristmasEve,andIhadtostirthepuddingfornextday,withacopper-stick,fromseventoeightbytheDutchclock.Itrieditwiththeloaduponmyleg(andthatmademethinkafreshofthemanwiththeloadonhisleg),andfoundthetendencyofexercisetobringthebreadandbutteroutatmyankle,quiteunmanageable.HappilyIslippedaway,anddepositedthatpartofmyconscienceinmygarretbedroom.

           "Hark!"saidI,whenIhaddonemystirring,andwastakingafinalwarminthechimneycornerbeforebeingsentuptobed;"wasthatgreatguns,Joe?"

           "Ah!"saidJoe."There’sanotherconwictoff."

           "Whatdoesthatmean,Joe?"saidI.

           Mrs.Joe,whoalwaystookexplanationsuponherself,said,snappishly,"Escaped.Escaped."AdministeringthedefinitionlikeTar-water.
