Forinthesefitshewasthemostoverridingcompanioneverknown; hewouldslaphishandonthetableforsilenceallround; hewouldflyupinapassionofangerataquestion,orsometimesbecausenonewasput,andsohejudgedthecompanywasnotfollowinghisstory. Norwouldheallowanyonetoleavetheinntillhehaddrunkhimselfsleepyandreeledofftobed.
Hisstorieswerewhatfrightenedpeopleworstofall. Dreadfulstoriestheywere—abouthanging,andwalkingtheplank,andstormsatsea,andtheDryTortugas,andwilddeedsandplacesontheSpanishMain. ByhisownaccounthemusthavelivedhislifeamongsomeofthewickedestmenthatGodeveralloweduponthesea, andthelanguageinwhichhetoldthesestoriesshockedourplaincountrypeoplealmostasmuchasthecrimesthathedescribed. Myfatherwasalwayssayingtheinnwouldberuined,forpeoplewouldsoonceasecomingtheretobetyrannizedoverandputdown,andsentshiveringtotheirbeds; butIreallybelievehispresencedidusgood.
