           ThePalmerstarted,andturnedsuddenlytowardstheJew:—"Whatfiendpromptedthatguess?"saidhe,hastily.

           "Nomatter,"saidtheJew,smiling,"sothatitbeatrueoneand,asIcanguessthywant,soIcansupplyit."

           "Butconsider,"saidthePalmer,"mycharacter,mydress,myvow."

           "IknowyouChristians,"repliedtheJew,"andthatthenoblestofyouwilltakethestaffandsandalinsuperstitiouspenance,andwalkafoottovisitthegravesofdeadmen."

           "Blasphemenot,Jew,"saidthePilgrim,sternly.

           "Forgiveme,"saidtheJew;"Ispokerashly.Buttheredroptwordsfromyoulastnightandthismorning,that,likesparksfromflint,showedthemetalwithin;andinthebosomofthatPalmer’sgown,ishiddenaknight’schainandspursofgold.Theyglancedasyoustoopedovermybedinthemorning."
