           Yetthepassivecourageinspiredbytheloveofgain,inducedtheJewstodarethevariousevilstowhichtheyweresubjected,inconsiderationoftheimmenseprofitswhichtheywereenabledtorealizeinacountrynaturallysowealthyasEngland.Inspiteofeverykindofdiscouragement,andevenofthespecialcourtoftaxationsalreadymentioned,calledtheJews’Exchequer,erectedfortheverypurposeofdespoilinganddistressingthem,theJewsincreased,multiplied,andaccumulatedhugesums,whichtheytransferredfromonehandtoanotherbymeansofbillsofexchangeaninventionforwhichcommerceissaidtobeindebtedtothem,andwhichenabledthemtotransfertheirwealthfromlandtoland,thatwhenthreatenedwithoppressioninonecountry,theirtreasuremightbesecuredinanother.

           TheobstinacyandavariceoftheJewsbeingthusinameasureplacedinoppositiontothefanaticismthattyrannyofthoseunderwhomtheylived,seemedtoincreaseinproportiontothepersecutionwithwhichtheywerevisited;andtheimmensewealththeyusuallyacquiredincommerce,whileitfrequentlyplacedthemindanger,wasatothertimesusedtoextendtheirinfluence,andtosecuretothemacertaindegreeofprotection.Onthesetermstheylived;andtheircharacter,influencedaccordingly,waswatchful,suspicious,andtimidyetobstinate,uncomplying,andskilfulinevadingthedangerstowhichtheywereexposed.
