Whenthebarbicanwascarried,theSableKnightsentnoticeofthehappyeventtoLocksley,requestinghimatthesametime,tokeepsuchastrictobservationonthecastleasmightpreventthedefendersfromcombiningtheirforceforasuddensally,andrecoveringtheoutworkwhichtheyhadlost.Thistheknightwaschieflydesirousofavoiding,consciousthatthemenwhomheled,beinghastyanduntrainedvolunteers,imperfectlyarmedandunaccustomedtodiscipline,must,uponanysuddenattack,fightatgreatdisadvantagewiththeveteransoldiersoftheNormanknights,whowerewellprovidedwitharmsbothdefensiveandoffensive;andwho,tomatchthezealandhighspiritofthebesiegers,hadalltheconfidencewhicharisesfromperfectdisciplineandthehabitualuseofweapons.
Theknightemployedtheintervalincausingtobeconstructedasortoffloatingbridge,orlongraft,bymeansofwhichhehopedtocrossthemoatindespiteoftheresistanceoftheenemy.Thiswasaworkofsometime,whichtheleadersthelessregretted,asitgaveUlricaleisuretoexecuteherplanofdiversionintheirfavour,whateverthatmightbe.
Whentheraftwascompleted,theBlackKnightaddressedthebesiegers:—"Itavailsnotwaitingherelonger,myfriends;thesunisdescendingtothewest—andIhavethatuponmyhandswhichwillnotpermitmetotarrywithyouanotherday.Besides,itwillbeamarvelifthehorsemencomenotuponusfromYork,unlesswespeedilyaccomplishourpurpose.
