Thearchers,trainedbytheirwoodlandpastimestothemosteffectiveuseofthelong-bow,shot,tousetheappropriatephraseofthetime,so"whollytogether,"thatnopointatwhichadefendercouldshowtheleastpartofhisperson,escapedtheircloth-yardshafts.Bythisheavydischarge,whichcontinuedasthickandsharpashail,while,notwithstanding,everyarrowhaditsindividualaim,andflewbyscorestogetheragainsteachembrasureandopeningintheparapets,aswellasateverywindowwhereadefendereitheroccasionallyhadpost,ormightbesuspectedtobestationed,—bythissustaineddischarge,twoorthreeofthegarrisonwereslain,andseveralotherswounded.But,confidentintheirarmourofproof,andinthecoverwhichtheirsituationafforded,thefollowersofFront-de-Boeuf,andhisallies,showedanobstinacyindefenceproportionedtothefuryoftheattackandrepliedwiththedischargeoftheirlargecross-bows,aswellaswiththeirlong-bows,slings,andothermissileweapons,tothecloseandcontinuedshowerofarrows;and,astheassailantswerenecessarilybutindifferentlyprotected,didconsiderablymoredamagethantheyreceivedattheirhand.Thewhizzingofshaftsandofmissiles,onbothsides,wasonlyinterruptedbytheshoutswhicharosewheneithersideinflictedorsustainedsomenotableloss.
