           AllthemonarchsoftheNormanracehadshownthemostmarkedpredilectionfortheirNormansubjects;thelawsofthechase,andmanyothersequallyunknowntothemilderandmorefreespiritoftheSaxonconstitution,hadbeenfixeduponthenecksofthesubjugatedinhabitants,toaddweight,asitwere,tothefeudalchainswithwhichtheywereloaded.Atcourt,andinthecastlesofthegreatnobles,wherethepompandstateofacourtwasemulated,Norman-Frenchwastheonlylanguageemployed;incourtsoflaw,thepleadingsandjudgmentsweredeliveredinthesametongue.Inshort,Frenchwasthelanguageofhonour,ofchivalry,andevenofjustice,whilethefarmoremanlyandexpressiveAnglo-Saxonwasabandonedtotheuseofrusticsandhinds,whoknewnoother.Still,however,thenecessaryintercoursebetweenthelordsofthesoil,andthoseoppressedinferiorbeingsbywhomthatsoilwascultivated,occasionedthegradualformationofadialect,compoundedbetwixttheFrenchandtheAnglo-Saxon,inwhichtheycouldrenderthemselvesmutuallyintelligibletoeachother;andfromthisnecessityarosebydegreesthestructureofourpresentEnglishlanguage,inwhichthespeechofthevictorsandthevanquishedhavebeensohappilyblendedtogether;andwhichhassincebeensorichlyimprovedbyimportationsfromtheclassicallanguages,andfromthosespokenbythesouthernnationsofEurope.
