Amidthevariedfortunesofthecombat,theeyesofallendeavouredtodiscovertheleadersofeachband,who,minglinginthethickofthefight,encouragedtheircompanionsbothbyvoiceandexample.Bothdisplayedgreatfeatsofgallantry,nordideitherBois-GuilbertortheDisinheritedKnightfindintheranksopposedtothemachampionwhocouldbetermedtheirunquestionedmatch.Theyrepeatedlyendeavouredtosingleouteachother,spurredbymutualanimosity,andawarethatthefallofeitherleadermightbeconsideredasdecisiveofvictory.Such,however,wasthecrowdandconfusion,that,duringtheearlierpartoftheconflict,theireffortstomeetwereunavailing,andtheywererepeatedlyseparatedbytheeagernessoftheirfollowers,eachofwhomwasanxioustowinhonour,bymeasuringhisstrengthagainsttheleaderoftheoppositeparty.
