AmongthelatterwasthePriorofJorvaulx,inthemostgallanttrimwhichadignitaryofthechurchcouldventuretoexhibit.Furandgoldwerenotsparedinhisgarments;andthepointsofhisboots,out-herodingthepreposterousfashionofthetime,turnedupsoveryfar,astobeattached,nottohiskneesmerely,buttohisverygirdle,andeffectuallypreventedhimfromputtinghisfootintothestirrup.This,however,wasaslightinconveniencetothegallantAbbot,who,perhaps,evenrejoicingintheopportunitytodisplayhisaccomplishedhorsemanshipbeforesomanyspectators,especiallyofthefairsex,dispensedwiththeuseofthesesupportstoatimidrider.TherestofPrinceJohn’sretinueconsistedofthefavouriteleadersofhismercenarytroops,somemaraudingbaronsandprofligateattendantsuponthecourt,withseveralKnightsTemplarsandKnightsofStJohn.
Itmaybehereremarked,thattheknightsofthesetwoorderswereaccountedhostiletoKingRichard,havingadoptedthesideofPhilipofFranceinthelongtrainofdisputeswhichtookplaceinPalestinebetwixtthatmonarchandthelion-heartedKingofEngland.Itwasthewell-knownconsequenceofthisdiscordthatRichard’srepeatedvictorieshadbeenrenderedfruitless,hisromanticattemptstobesiegeJerusalemdisappointed,andthefruitofalltheglorywhichhehadacquiredhaddwindledintoanuncertaintrucewiththeSultanSaladin.
