Solomon’s Road

           Atanotherplaceitwascutinzigzagsoutofthesideofaprecipicefivehundredfeetdeep,andinathirdittunnelledthroughthebaseofaninterveningridge,aspaceofthirtyyardsormore. 

           Herewenoticedthatthesidesofthetunnelwerecoveredwithquaintsculptures,mostlyofmailedfiguresdrivinginchariots. One,whichwasexceedinglybeautiful,representedawholebattlescenewithaconvoyofcaptivesbeingmarchedoffinthedistance. 

           "Well,"saidSirHenry,afterinspectingthisancientworkofart, "itisverywelltocallthisSolomon’sRoad,butmyhumbleopinionisthattheEgyptianshadbeenherebeforeSolomon’speopleeversetafootonit. Ifthisisn’tEgyptianorPhoenicianhandiwork,Imustsaythatitisverylikeit." 

           Bymiddaywehadadvancedsufficientlydownthemountaintosearchtheregionwherewoodwastobemetwith. Firstwecametoscatteredbusheswhichgrewmoreandmorefrequent, tillatlastwefoundtheroadwindingthroughavastgroveofsilvertreessimilartothosewhicharetobeseenontheslopesofTableMountainatCapeTown. Ihadneverbeforemetwiththeminallmywanderings,exceptattheCape,andtheirappearancehereastonishedmegreatly. 

           "Ah!"saidGood,surveyingtheseshining-leavedtreeswithevidententhusiasm,"hereislotsofwood,letusstopandcooksomedinner; Ihaveaboutdigestedthatrawheart." 

           Nobodyobjectedtothis, soleavingtheroadwemadeourwaytoastreamwhichwasbabblingawaynotfaroff,andsoonhadagoodlyfireofdryboughsblazing.
