GoodandIlookedaccordingly,andthere,windingawaytowardstheplain,waswhatappearedtobeawideturnpikeroad. Wehadnotseenitatfirstbecause,onreachingtheplain,itturnedbehindsomebrokencountry. Wedidnotsayanything,atleast,notmuch;wewerebeginningtolosethesenseofwonder. SomehowitdidnotseemparticularlyunnaturalthatweshouldfindasortofRomanroadinthisstrangeland. Weacceptedthefact,thatwasall.

Thiswassoundadvice,andsosoonaswehadwashedourfacesandhandsinthestreamweactedonit. Foramileormorewemadeourwayoverbouldersandacrosspatchesofsnow,tillsuddenly,onreachingthetopofthelittlerise,wefoundtheroadatourfeet. Itwasasplendidroadcutoutofthesolidrock,atleastfiftyfeetwide,andapparentlywellkept;thoughtheoddthingwasthatitseemedtobeginthere. Wewalkeddownandstoodonit,butonesinglehundredpacesbehindus,inthedirectionofSheba’sBreasts,itvanished, theentiresurfaceofthemountainbeingstrewnwithbouldersinterspersedwithpatchesofsnow.
