Wehadtocrossafewnarrowfiords,andatlastquiteawidegulf;thetide,thenhigh,allowedustopassoverwithoutdelay,andtoreachthehamletofAlftanes,onemilebeyond.
Thatevening,afterhavingfordedtworiversfulloftroutandpike,calledAlfaandHeta,wewereobligedtospendthenightinadesertedbuildingworthytobehauntedbyalltheelfinsofScandinavia.Theicekingcertainlyheldcourthere,andgaveusallnightlongsamplesofwhathecoulddo.
Noparticulareventmarkedthenextday.Bogs,deadlevels,melancholydeserttracks,whereverwetravelled.Bynightfallwehadaccomplishedhalfourjourney,andwelayatKrösolbt.
Onthe19thofJune,foraboutamile,thatisanIcelandicmile,wewalkeduponhardenedlava;thisgroundiscalledinthecountry‘hraun’;thewrithensurfacepresentedtheappearanceofdistorted,twistedcables,sometimesstretchedinlength,sometimescontortedtogether;
