"Snæfell!Snæfell!"
Thenrecommendingme,byanimpressivegesture,tokeepsilence,hewentintotheboatwhichawaitedhim.Ifollowed,andpresentlyweweretreadingthesoilofIceland.
Thefirstmanwesawwasagood-lookingfellowenough,inageneral’suniform.Yethewasnotageneralbutamagistrate,theGovernoroftheisland,M.leBaronTrampehimself.TheProfessorwassoonawareofthepresencehewasin.HedeliveredhimhislettersfromCopenhagen,andthenfollowedashortconversationintheDanishlanguage,thepurportofwhichIwasquiteignorantof,andforaverygoodreason.Buttheresultofthisfirstconversationwas,thatBaronTrampeplacedhimselfentirelyattheserviceofProfessorLiedenbrock.
Myunclewasjustascourteouslyreceivedbythemayor,M.Finsen,whoseappearancewasasmilitary,anddispositionandofficeaspacific,astheGovernor’s.
